PUHOI HERITAGE MUSEUM
Have YOU been to the
Puhoi Heritage Museum?
It’s worth a visit.
We aim to be open every day from
11am to 3pm (except Good Friday & Christmas Day)
See photos of Puhoi as it used to be and maybe buildings that
were once on your property.
In part of the former Puhoi Convent School our museum tells the story of the 83
settlers from Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) who arrived in 1863
expecting 40 acres of free farmland each but were met with almost impenetrable
bush. This became their means of survival by eating the nikau palm and berries,
selling firewood, shingles, wharf piles, railways sleepers, sawn timber, kauri gum,
fungus and bark. Within 20 years their hard work had formed productive farms
and the village of Puhoi.
Audio guides enhance the story-telling and children love them.
You may have a link to a Bohemian settler
We have an extensive genealogical database, around 5000 family photos and are compiling
family folders. We also hold the history of some of the early organisations in Puhoi
A range of Puhoi souvenirs such as tea towels, jute bags, fridge magnets, badges are for sale
Bohemian music CDs and history booklets are available
We are run by volunteers who open the museum, do research, collect history, arrange
museum displays and do handywork jobs. We would welcome anyone willing to give a hand.
It’s not necessary to be of Bohemian descent to become a member with annual fee of $20.
For those unable to volunteer, but would like to help, we are a registered charity so donations
over $5 can claim a tax refund (get a 1/3 rd back from the government-always nice)
